Recovering a Document When Valdocs 1.1x Locks Up Floppy Only Method This technical information is provided by Epson Systems Product Support Group. While it should prove useful to you we cannot guarantee that it will hold true in every instance. W A R N I N G DO NOT REBOOT the computer!!!! The Valdocs 1.1x Editor actively stores all keyboard input to the data disk in a temporary file called TEXTWORK.TMP. If you reboot (or reset) the computer, Valdocs will delete all temporary files from your data disk. If that happens, there is no way to recover a newly created document or any changes that have not been STOREd. Therefore, for this procedure, we are assuming that you have not rebooted your computer and are starting from the point where Valdocs 1.1x has locked up. We also assume that your Experience level is at Advanced or higher, otherwise, you will not be able to exit to TPM in step 4. C A U T I O N To preserve the integrity of your diskettes' data, do not remove them from the computer without first telling Valdocs 1.1x that you want to do so. Since Valdocs 1.1x has locked up it is no longer accepting input, therefore, there is no way to tell it that you want to remove a diskette. Because of that, this is one time that you will have to remove a diskette without telling Valdocs 1.1x ahead of time. Keeping your data diskette safe 1. Wait until the disk drive lights are out and remove the data diskette from the right disk drive. IF either disk drive's light does not go out, turn off the computer and then remove the data diskette from the right disk drive. 2. Place a good (or new) diskette in the right disk drive. Reboot the computer by pressing the reset button which is located on the front of the computer below the right disk drive. 1 87.7.15 Getting to TPM and the original data disk 3. Now inform TPM that you have changed diskettes by entering CTRL-C. This is done by holding down the CTRL key and typing the letter C. 7. Log to the right disk drive (drive B:). Type: B: and press RETURN. Finding the temporary file needed 8. At the new B prompt type DIR and press RETURN. This will give you a file directory of the right disk drive. 9. In the file directory you will find at least one of these three files, TEXTWORK.TMP, TEXTBKUP.VAL, or TEXTACTV.VAL. In the example below, input the word "type" and use each of the three file names you find in place of . Input: type and press RETURN. Make note of any files that display data on the screen. Do not worry about any "garbage" or graphics characters that display on the screen. It is just data for the Editor's use. 10. Repeat step 9 for the remainder of the three files. 2 87.7.15 Making the temporary file permanent 11. Use only the example below for the file that displayed the document. A. For TEXTWORK.TMP type: ren textwork.old=textwork.tmp B. For TEXTBKUP.VAL type: ren textbkup.old=textbkup.val C. For TEXTACTV.VAL type: ren textactv.old=textactv.val and press RETURN. 12.
